Despite regulations banning their use in the production of fridges and all other cooling products, the majority of refrigeration equipment in use today still contains ozone depleting CFCs, HCFCs or HFCs – which have a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of around 1400 x CO2. Even the latest technology Hydrocarbon (HC) fridges and cold rooms can be harmful if disposed of incorrectly.

A pile of fridges

Fridge processing LineTherefore, it has never been more important to recycle all fridges and panels properly, protecting the environment and minimising pollution.

At Overton Recycling, once the cooling circuit gases and oils are extracted from the fridge, the shelves and drawers are removed. This empty unit is crushed to extract the gasses from the foam insulation, which is subsequently processed into small pellets for use as an oil spill absorber, or for burning in Energy from Waste (EfW) plants.

We export the remaining plastic to specialist re-processors. The ferrous metals are used in construction around the world and the non-ferrous metals are used mainly in the UK motor industry.
